Course objectives

This course aims to provide an overview of Digital Humanities in the field of historical research, focusing on Ancient and Medieval History. It will cover key tools, methodologies, concepts, trends, and collaborative projects related to the publication, study, and digital dissemination of ancient and medieval documents. Additionally, it will introduce the methodological foundations of historical research within the context of Antiquity and the Middle Ages, allowing for a deeper understanding of the application of digital techniques in studying, researching, and disseminating knowledge in these specific disciplinary areas.

Questo insegnamento si propone di fornire una panoramica delle Digital Humanities nel campo della ricerca storica, in relazione alla Storia Antica e Medievale. Saranno presentati i principali strumenti, metodologie, concetti chiave, tendenze e progetti collaborativi per la pubblicazione, lo studio e la diffusione digitale dei documenti antichi e medievali. Inoltre, verranno introdotte le basi metodologiche della ricerca storica nel contesto dell'Antichità e del Medioevo, al fine di consentire una più approfondita comprensione dell’applicazione delle tecniche digitali in relazione alle esigenze di studio, ricerca e disseminazione di questi specifici ambiti disciplinari.

[Knowledge and comprehension]
At the end of the course, students will know:

  • Research methods of ancient and medieval history
  • The main types of sources in ancient and medieval history
  • The main digital technologies applied to analyse these sources
  • The methodological issues resulting from the use of digital tools

[Applying knowledge and comprehension / Independent judgement]
Students will be able to apply the acquired knowledge on digital technologies to the analysis of ancient and medieval sources, proving adequate ability to assess the tools examined throughout the course.

[Communicating skills]
Students will learn the correct vocabulary in relation to the digital tools, sources and research methods analysed during the lectures.

[Learning skills]
The course will contribute to the development of the students’ skills to use digital tools in research in ancient and medieval history.

Al termine dell'insegnamento si dovranno conoscere:

  • Metodologie della ricerca storica antica e medievale
  • Principali tipologie di fonti sulla storia antica e medievale
  • Le principali tecniche digitali di analisi di queste fonti
  • I problemi metodologici posti da tali metodologie

Si dovrà essere in grado di applicare le conoscenze acquisite circa le tecniche digitali all'analisi delle fonti storiche antiche e medievali, dimostrando un'adeguata capacità di valutazione e giudizio degli strumenti analizzati a lezione.

[Abilità comunicative]
Si dovrà acquisire un adeguato lessico specifico relativo agli strumenti digitali, alle fonti e alle prassi di ricerca storica analizzate a lezione.

[Capacità di apprendimento]
L'insegnamento concorre allo sviluppo della capacità di utilizzare gli strumenti digitali nella prassi della ricerca in ambito storico antico e medievale.

Historical methods and digital tools:

  • Introduction: the basis of historical research in ancient and medieval history; methodologies and sources.
  • The main digital tools to study ancient and medieval history: possibilities and risks.
  • Specific case-studies and practical exercises in the use of databases and othe digital tools.

  • Metododologie della ricerca storica e strumenti digitali:
  • Introduzione: le basi della ricerca storica nell'antichità e nella storia medievale; metodologie e fonti.
  • I principali strumenti digitali per lo studio della storia antica e medievale: possibilità e rischi.
  • Studi di caso specifici ed esercitazioni pratiche sull'utilizzo di database e altri strumenti digitali.

Course delivery

The course will be offered in English and will last 36 hours, including lectures and practical exercises; for this reason, attending lectures is highly recommended. The course will be entirely held in-person. Students who will not be able to attend the lectures will find audio files on the Moodle platform as well as teaching material, except for practical exercises, which cannot be recorded. Alternative activities and additional texts to replace practical exercises will have to be arranged with the lecturers.

L'insegnamento sarà erogato in lingua inglese e prevede 36 ore di lezioni frontali con esercitazioni pratiche in classe, pertanto la frequenza è fortemente consigliata. Le lezioni saranno tutte in presenza. Chi non potrà frequentare le lezioni in presenza avrà la possibilità di fruire delle lezioni attraverso il deposito dei files audio nella piattaforma Moodle, insieme al materiale didattico. Fanno eccezione le esercitazioni pratiche, per le quali non sarà possibile fornire registrazioni audio: modalità alternative alla frequenza delle esercitazioni pratiche potranno essere eventualmente sostituite dallo studio di materiale aggiuntivo, da concordare con le/i docenti.

Learning assessment methods

Oral exam in English. The expected knowledge and skills will be tested in a question/answer exam with a mark on a 30 points scale. Results will be considered appropriate if students will:

Oral exam in English. The expected knowledge and skills will be tested in a question/answer exam with a mark on a 30 points scale. Results will be considered appropriate if students will:

  • prove to have clearly learnt the basis of historical practice;
  • know the main digital tools and their application to historical research;
  • prove to have acquired basic ability in the use of such tools.

In addition to the oral exam, students who will not attend the course in-person will have to arrange with the lecturers the production of an essay to replace the assessment of the practical exercises held in class.

Esame orale in lingua inglese. La preparazione sarà accertata tramite un colloquio e sarà considerata adeguata con votazione espressa in trentesimi, se

  • si dimostrerà di aver appreso con chiarezza i fondamenti metodologici della pratica storica,
  • si conosceranno le tecniche digitali e la loro applicazione alla ricerca storica,
  • si dimostrerà la capacità di base di utilizzo di tali strumentazioni.

Per chi non frequenterà in presenza, la valutazione sulla parte pratica dell’insegnamento potrà essere sostituita dalla produzione di un elaborato scritto, concordato con le/i docenti, in aggiunta al colloquio orale sulla parte teorica comune a tutte/i.
