Course objectives
The course intends to present the relevance of corpus linguistics for the investigation of English and German.

Results of learning outcomes
The students will be required to discuss the relevance of corpus linguistics for the investigation of English and German highlighting tools and techniques used to design and compilate text corpora, with a special focus on diachronic corpora of English and German. Moreover, they will be required to develop autonomy and flexibility in the comprehension and analysis of corpus linguistics as a specific research field, and to characterize its relevance for the English and the German language and their history. Furthermore, the students will have to be able to highlight structure and properties of extant corpora of English and German and to answer questions of an interpretive kind and not based on superficial factual knowledge concerning concrete cases drawn from the text corpora presented during the course.
Gli studenti dovranno comprendere la rilevanza della linguistica dei corpora per l'indagine dell'inglese e del tedesco evidenziando gli strumenti e le tecniche utilizzate per progettare e compilare i corpora di testi, con particolare attenzione ai corpora diacronici di inglese e tedesco. Inoltre, gli studenti dovranno sviluppare autonomia e flessibilità nella comprensione e nell'analisi della linguistica dei corpora come campo di ricerca specifico e caratterizzarne la rilevanza per la lingua inglese e tedesca e la loro storia. Inoltre, gli studenti dovranno essere in grado di evidenziare la struttura e le proprietà dei corpora esistenti di inglese e tedesco e di rispondere a domande di tipo interpretativo e non basate su conoscenze fattuali superficiali riguardanti casi concreti tratti dai corpora testuali presentati durante il corso.

Program
The course will first introduce corpus linguistics, providing a survey of tools and techniques to design and compilate text corpora, with a special focus on diachronic corpora of English and German. Then, it will show how to use corpora for doing linguistic analysis and research. Finally, it will discuss a number of concrete case-studies coming from the history of English and German which will guide the students through the analysis of single aspects of these languages and their diachronic development.

Course delivery
The course will consist of 2 distinct modules of 18 hours each, held by two different teachers and devoted respectively to the history of English and of German.
Il corso introdurrà innanzitutto la linguistica dei corpora, fornendo una panoramica degli strumenti e delle tecniche per la progettazione e la compilazione di corpora testuali, con particolare attenzione ai corpora diacronici di inglese e tedesco. Quindi, mostrerà come utilizzare i corpora per l'analisi e la ricerca linguistica. Infine, verranno discussi alcuni casi-studio concreti provenienti dalla storia dell'inglese e del tedesco che guideranno gli studenti nell'analisi di singoli aspetti di queste lingue e del loro sviluppo diacronico.
