Course objectives
Digital Philology, born from the encounter of ICT methods and tools with the traditional field of textual criticism, is a very young discipline that is rapidly evolving thanks to an active theoretical discussion. This course aims at providing students with the methods and tools necessary to produce digital scholarly editions of texts, with a focus on works from the ancient world.
The course will introduce students to the methods and technologies of digital editing and digital analysis of texts with the dual purpose of 1) accessing scholarly editions in a machine-readable format and 2) creating new scholarly editions in a digital environment. Students will learn key elements of this workflow to be able to produce scholarly data and understand the difference between print and digital editions.
Students who have already attended other courses in any philology (Germanic, Ancient Greek, Latin, Italian, etc.), or who are interested in the subject of scholarly editing, are welcome because all of them can acquire interdisciplinary skills. At the beginning of the module, in any case, a summary of the basic principles of textual criticism will be proposed to the students.
La Filologia digitale è una disciplina molto recente, nata dall'incontro di metodi e strumenti dell'informatica con il campo degli studi di critica testuale, che sta attraversando un periodo di rapida evoluzione e vivace riflessione teorica. Il modulo si propone di fornire agli studenti gli strumenti e la metodologia necessaria per preparare Edizioni Scientifiche Digitali di testi, in particolar modo di opere letterarie del mondo antico.
Il corso introdurrà gli studenti ai metodi e alle tecnologie dell'edizione digitale e dell'analisi digitale dei testi, con il duplice scopo 1) di accedere alle edizioni critiche in un formato leggibile dalla macchina e 2) di creare nuove edizioni critiche in un ambiente digitale. Gli studenti apprenderanno gli elementi chiave di questi due aspetti al fine di produrre criticamente dati di opere testuali e comprendere la differenza tra edizioni cartacee ed edizioni digitali.
Sono benvenuti studenti che abbiano già frequentato altri corsi di filologia (germanica, greca, latina, italiana etc.), o che siano comunque interessati all'argomento, perché potranno acquisire competenze di tipo trasversale e interdisciplinari. All'inizio del modulo, in ogni caso, si proporrà un riepilogo dei principi fondamentali della critica testuale.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
The student will have a good basic knowledge of textual criticism and will be able to analyze a literary text belonging to a cultural tradition s/he has good knowledge of, so that s/he can prepare a critical digital edition according to the best practices of the so colled Linked Open Data (LOD). Students will therefore gain also knowledge of Open Access for textual heritage, automated text recognition and character encoding of historical texts, markup languages, and data citation.APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
The student will be able to create a critical digital edition using the text encoding method, and to publish it on the Web using the competences and software tools s/he learned to use during the course.INDEPENDENT JUDGEMENT
Students will be able to choose the appropriate text encoding and annotation solutions while learning to analyze and edit scholarly texts in an independent and responsible workflow.COMMUNICATION SKILLS
The student will show that s/he can analyze and interpret texts in a way which allows to choose the appropriate encoding strategies for the chosen edition type. S/He will also be able to document their editorial and encoding choices in an adequate manner.LEARNING SKILLS

Lo studente avrà una buona conoscenza di base della critica testuale e sarà in grado di analizzare un testo letterario appartenente a una tradizione culturale di cui ha una buona conoscenza, in modo da poter preparare un'edizione critica digitale secondo le migliori pratiche dei cosiddetti Linked Open Data (LOD). Gli studenti acquisiranno quindi anche conoscenze sull'Open Access per il patrimonio testuale, sul riconoscimento automatico del testo e sulla codifica dei caratteri dei testi antichi, sui linguaggi di markup e sulla citazione dei dati.CAPACITÀ DI APPLICARE CONOSCENZA E COMPRENSIONE
Gli studenti saranno messi in grado di creare una edizione diplomatica e/o critica usando gli strumenti della codifica e di pubblicarla sul Web con gli strumenti software e le competenze apprese durante il modulo. In particolare, avranno le competenze necessarie per scegliere le soluzioni di codifica più appropriate per quanto riguarda gli schemi XML/TEI e la loro personalizzazione ai fini dell'edizione.AUTONOMIA DI GIUDIZIO
Gli studenti saranno in grado di scegliere soluzioni appropriate di codifica e annotazione del testo, imparando ad analizzare ed editare criticamente i testi in un flusso di lavoro indipendente e responsabile.ABILITÀ COMUNICATIVE

The unit consists of lessons for a total of 36 hours and it will also engage the students in practical activities using datasets and web-based tools (data repositories, code editors, and annotation plaforms).

Program
The program will consist of three parts:
- An introduction to the basic concepts of textual criticism and to the specific features of digital editions.
- Text encoding for digital critical editions according to the best practices of Linked Open Data (LOD).
- The last part will include direct training on the use of existing tools for the creation of digital editions.
Students are invited to propose texts that they have studied in other courses for the exercises and/or for the final project, or for their own research interest, or because they are the subject of their degree thesis.
Il programma consisterà in tre parti:
- Un'introduzione ai concetti di base della critica testuale e alle caratteristiche specifiche delle edizioni digitali.
- La codifica del testo per le edizioni critiche digitali secondo le linee guida dei Linked Open Data (LOD).
- L'ultima parte includerà una formazione diretta sull'uso degli strumenti esistenti per la creazione di edizioni digitali.
Gli studenti sono invitati a proporre testi che hanno studiato in altri corsi per le esercitazioni e/o per il progetto finale, o per il loro interesse di ricerca, o perché sono trattati nella loro tesi di laurea.
