Language Technologies and Digital Humanities

Accurate humanistic knowledge, particularly in the historical and literary fields, on the period between the end of the ancient world and the thresholds of the modern age; the ability to understand and use the specialized lexicon of a philological-linguistic and literary order is necessary.

Students will know in depth the content, principles and methods of the philological-linguistic disciplines through digital tools, presenting the results of their study in a correct form.

The course contributes to the methodological and critical contents of the program and aims to provide students with the basic philological-linguistic categories that allow a competent use of digital tools in the field of Romance languages.

The main digital tools for philological-linguistic research in the field of Romance languages will be illustrated, with special attention to historic lexicography and lexicology studies in Italian.

Lectures lasting a total of 12 hours (2 CFU), held in the classroom with the aid of projections, text readings and digital tools.

The knowledge and skills required will be tested by means of an oral interview, which will focus on: 1) discussion of a report of approximately ten pages. The student will agree the subject in advance with one of the course lecturers and will send it to the lecturer in at least twenty days before the exam; 2) a number of questions aimed at testing knowledge of the essays and the read textbook. Preparation will be considered adequate (with a grade expressed in /30) if the student demonstrates the acquisition of good knowledge, comprehension and ability to apply the course topics; he should show ability to express in a competent form and with an acceptable use of scientific vocabulary and with autonomous organisation of arguments; he should show adequate abilities to define topics.

In addition to the above-mentioned textbook, the student will read at least two sceintific essays from a list that the lecturers will indicate on the course page at the beginning of the lectures.
