Language Technologies and Digital Humanities

A good knowledge of the Latin language is required.
In the absence of specific documentation, the teachers reserve the right to verify it through the entry test of Latin via Moodle.

The course, tha has 2 indivisible modules, aims to illustrate the characteristics and methods of use of Latin corpora and the digital approach to research and teaching the discipline.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING Know the main methods of the digital approach to Latin and the main Latin corpora

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING Design digital Latin research activities based on solid theoretical foundations; apply corpora and digital tools to the planned activities;

AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT Critically reflect on the tools available and propose new ones; understand the innovative implications for Latin research and teaching

COMMUNICATION SKILLS Express oneself in a scientifically correct way regarding the topics of the discipline

LEARNING ABILITY Refine the learning skills of the discipline; ability to re-elaborate knowledge

Introduction to Digital Humanities and Digital Latin A brief history of Digital Latin Two fields of application of Digital Latin: Digital Latin Teaching and Digital Rhetoric,
Students will be encouraged to create a little research project concerning the application of DH to Latin;
the project should include the comprehension and the translation of Latin texts.

The teaching takes place in the presence, with the constant invitation to the participation of students and does not forecast the recording of the lessons and the streaming. Those who will not be able to attend read the instructions contained in the Program section.

The oral exam for attending people (24 hours on 36, 12 on 18 for the module) will focus on:

A. the topics of the lessons with translation, analysis and commentary of all the passages examined, including those of the slides;

B. reading of two of the essays included in the bibliography

C. History of Latin literature as indicated. For 6 CFU from the origins to Titus Livius. The suiggested (minimal) book is G. GARBARINO, L. PASQUARIELLO, Vivamus, Turin, Paravia, 2016 or equivalent high school volume with anthology. In this case, the volume must be checked by the teacher. If some students have already prepared the history of Latin literature in the BA or in another MA, they will agree with professors on a replacement program for this part

Non-attending students will add the metric reading and the translation of Horace, Epistles I, 7-12.
